Our first family backpacking trip, I forgot the poles! But I had a bit of rope and was able to use that instead to hang the tent from a tree. A bit tricky to get the right height, but really no need for it to be exact anyway. Very, very glad to have found an affordable, super light backpacking tent for 4.

I just ordered my second Trekker 4, because this tent is such a bargain and has served me well for a few years now. I’m 6’3″ and a tent that I can stand up in that is less than $200 is rare to find. Under $100? There is the Trekker 4, and I think that is it. But it isn’t just the low price, because even though it is inexpensive this tent is still a quality product.
This tent is extremely roomy. I use it as a 1 person tent on car camping trips with a telescoping pole in the center. A small low to the ground cot, a little camp table, and even a small camp chair plus my pack all fit nicely inside.
The setup is super easy! I lay a 7″x9″ tarp out to protect the bottom of the tent despite the floor being a good quality material. Stake out the corners to get a nice tight pitch. Extend a telescoping tent pole in the center of the floor with a rubber stopper on the tip to protect the tent peak with. Now stake out the 3 guy lines and the vestibule door. With a little practice you can do it all in under 10 minutes.
You can definitely use it while backpacking with a group, but it is a little heavy compared to other tents. That being said, I’ve gone backpacking with this tent on short weekend trips and the trekking poles connector option and the extra weight was worth having the space to sprawl out at night and stretch my limbs.
I have no leaks with this tent even in heavy thunderstorms. The ventilation is great, and I never had a problem with condensation. Full Disclosure: I did add a waterproofing spray to mine and I will do the same with the new one.
The reason I’m buying a second one is because my daughter loves using this tent when we take trips together (which means I have to pick another RCP tent for myself to use). She’s 5’8″ and thinks this tent is huge! We’ll be taking a trip to a National Forest soon, so I’m looking forward to setting up both tents near each other and spending some quality time with her. We’ll both have plenty of room in our own private tent, and I’m all for the both of us being happy and pampered with our own space on these trips!
You really cannot beat this tent if you want a lot of space that is easy to deploy but that is not going to bust your budget. Maybe one day I’ll buy a third!

SUMMARY: I like this tent a lot. I can (barely) stand up in it, and it looks great. It doesn’t breathe very well, though, so I had to mod it with clamps. Between that, and having to significantly waterproof it, I gave it four stars, but now I have it exactly the way I want it.
SIZE
This is a huge tent, per the stated dimensions. But a free-standing tent’s walls are much more vertical than a trekking-pole tent, as their poles concave outward, and the edges of the tent walls are attached to the poles to help increase the interior volume. A trekking-pole’s tent walls will at best be a straight line from the stake to the top of the pole, and will probably even sag a little bit, which compromises headroom. So with less floor space and headroom, a free-standing tent can feel larger than a trekking-pole tent. (For this tent, pull the floor edges tight and extend the pole as much as you can to get the wall edges straight; don’t think you can just pull the sides to get the tent to expand.) In addition, every tent by every manufacturer is advertised to hold more people than they can comfortably accommodate. The general rule of thumb is to get a tent for one more than how many people will be in the tent (for example, two people in a 3-person tent). That way you have elbow room, as well as have space to pull things out of your backpack. But with this tent, we have a pole taking up space in the middle. So how roomy is this tent?
I measured this interior floor to be 106″ x 86″, and 77″ interior height (advertised dimensions are 108″ x 86″ x 80″). This means you have 106 / 2 = 53″ on one side, but accounting for the pole, it’s actually 52″. So that means that two sleeping pads 26″ wide will fit on one side of the pole. But to ensure that the wall of the tent isn’t in your face, two 22″ pads would work much better. Of course, that’s sleeping shoulder-to-shoulder. My wife likes a 28″ x 78″ pad, and my son and I use a 30″ x 76″ pad. With my wife along the 86″ width, and my son and I along the 106″ length, it works. So, therefore, three people can comfortably sleep in this tent. Even with only two people, you probably would want both to sleep lengthways. So no cuddling.
WATERPROOFNESS
It seems that very few tents are totally waterproof. Some of the expensive ones even tell you you’re going to have to waterproof it yourself. Even if it is waterproof, you’ll still have to waterproof it over time. It’s just something you should be prepared to do.
This tent is mostly waterproof. It says the seams are taped, but it looks like only at the floor. I sprayed it with a hose for a few minutes, and didn’t have any leaks, but there were some puddles after a sustained rain. So I guess the hose test isn’t a very thorough test.
Get seam sealer ($5) and silicone spray ($8), just apply a little at a time, and every few minutes, check for excess running down, as it will consolidate and harden to white spots if you don’t wipe it up. Plan on applying the silicone spray twice, after the first coat dries. Also turn the tent upside down and apply both to the outside of the floor. Give the tent at least 24 hours to dry, especially in high humid areas.
VENTILATION
This tent only has one vent. It goes the whole length of the back, but most of it is laying on the tent wall, so there is just a small opening. The vestibule walls go all the way to the ground, so no significant airflow there.
Using a carbon dioxide monitor to measure air flow, with only one person sleeping in the tent on a night with no wind, my CO2 monitor measured 3,500 ppm. That’s high. For reference, the outdoors is less than 450, and your house feels stuffy at 1,200. At 5,000+, you start getting headaches. This lack of airflow helps explain why some people consider the tent to be hot. I bought some tarp clamps and cord ($15) and three tent stakes ($3). I used two clamps to open the vent the whole length, and pulled out the vestibule so there would be a gap of a few inches. This isn’t going to breathe like a two-door double-walled tent, but these modifications made a huge difference. No matter how cold it is, I want to breathe, especially if I’m not in the comfort of my house. But I might not want to use this tent where it doesn’t cool down at night.
WEIGHT
The advertised weight is 4 lb, 10 oz, but the tent requires trekking poles, but not the handles, but also a pole connector, and it’s not clear if the weight includes the poles or not, because if you were going to use trekking poles anyway, you probably wouldn’t include that in your tent weight. Per my scale:
Two poles with no handles, no connector: 14 oz.
Connector: 4 oz
Two handles: 7 oz
So that means the minimum weight you need to take are the two handle-less poles (14 oz) plus the connector (4 oz), which sums up to 18 oz.
If you would take trekking poles anyway, then just add the connector (4 oz) to the weight of the tent.
The weight of the tent, plus three extra stakes, two plastic clamps, and three extra guy lines for the previously mentioned ventilation, plus a fourth extra stake to hold the wall down with the loop provided in the middle of the door, is 5 lb, 4 oz.
So the minimum you would have to carry with my mods is 6 lbs, 6 oz. I also waterproofed the tent a lot, so that could also account for a few ounces.
DOORS & VESTIBULES
Only one door and only one vestibule, but the vestibule large.
OUTSIDE TOP LOOP
Some reviewers said they didn’t get a loop on the outside at the top, where you could loop a guy wire over a tree branch, so you wouldn’t need to have the pole in the center. Mine had the loop.
LOOKS
It looks really cool. The color is an attractive army green that blends in well with the surroundings, and the shape looks historical. I call it my teepee.

We are wilderness camping for the first time in the Bitterroot Selway area in Idaho at Elk Point Campground and decided to go with this company.
Great tent at an excellent price!
The tent went up easily in 5 min., the first night I set it up in my yard for testing there was a steady rain that evening and there was water in each corner as well as the 2 side pockets. So I went the next day and purchased waterproofing and seam sealer, left it up for 3 more days until it rained again. Next morning after raining all night we opened the tent and there was not a drop of water inside. I did have issues with the trekking poles continually sliding down even after tightening. I contacted Customer Service and asked for a phone call so I could speak with a live person concerning the waterproofing and the poles. Katy replied that they really don’t really have a customer service number asked if there was something specific she could help with and sent a link to youtube on setting up the tent. I’m kinda old school and would prefer speaking to a live person but I went ahead and corresponded with an email then email again after a week when I did not get a response. So currently it appears Customer service is not the best. I did watch the video before setting up btw. I did figure out on my own that you have to open the clasp on the trekking pole tighten the screw up and play with it until it is almost too tight to close without breaking the clasp and it stays tight.
So take away is this it’s a great tent for the money, material is sturdy and breathable, trekking poles are sturdy enough after you figure out how to use them, seal the seams and waterproof tent to insure no water inside, which company recommends sealing the seams.
I would give the tent 5 stars and Customer service 4 stars. In my opinion all companies should have the ability to personally contact people using or purchasing products.

This tent provides that in spades. Even in a wind I was able to set it up today, and staking out was simple and easy.
The pros: Simple and easy set up. Great construction, high quality, and easy to take down and roll up back into its original bag. It’s roomy enough for both my wheelchair and my cot. I will be getting seam sealant before the spring camping season begins, but you have to do that with all tents.
The cons: None to be found here.
Works exceptionally well for my needs, and I look forward to using it this fall yet when I need to get out of the house and away from my spouse.

I have the Trekker Tent 3. Its hard to beat for the price. I have slept in it several times with the family. It sets up easy and is surprisingly spacious. I would give it five stars, but the webbing on the rear vent pulled away from the seam and tore the fabric. I can likely patch it and it will be fine, but it may need reinforcement in that area. Otherwise, great tent for a pretty incredible price. Definitely offers a good value.

This tent weighs the same as advertised. For a 4 person tent it is super light for the price point. Set up is quick and easy, but may be hard on rocky ground in the alpine as pegging the corners is far better than tying them out to rocks.
We had it shipped to Canada. There were no extra brokerage fees with the Fedex shipping method and the tent arrived in 4 days. All around great product.

On a 4400 mile motorcycle trip over 16 days, I used this tent every night to camp. It goes up in about 5 minutes, and the single pole design is superb. The back wall has a ventilation panel which keeps the tent airy. It has plenty of room for my air mattress and sleeping bag on one side of the center pole, and plenty of room for all my gear (helmet, riding clothes, dry bags) on the other side. With minimal gear, it can hold two people easily, but with all the gear I bring on a motorcycle, I don’t see how it could hold two. The “portico” flap design is ingenious. In a truly powerful thunderstorm in Arkansas, it held up without any leaks. It comes down by just removing the one center pole, then fold it up and pack it away. Takes a few minutes! That’s really important when one is on the move everyday.

So far so good. Easiest pitch I’ve ever had. Solo pitch time 6 minutes including guy lines and pole connection. I wanted something that I could set up fast and have room to stand, as well as enough room for my 6 foot husband to sleep without the foot box against the wall. We are a family of 5 with two dogs and this is going to be a great cost effective addition to our tent collection. Gotta say I love the single wall design1 and the vent and net door leading to the vestibule appear to provide adequateventilation. I am water proofing as a precation because these will be used mostly in the Sierras. First practice pitch was done at night in 15 mile per hour winds. No breeze could be felt from the inside and the interior was quite warm. Will be taking this on the High Sierra Trail in June 2021 and will post a follow up after the trip.

The tent is great. Good thickness of nylon. Suggest different stakes that have a J or T shaped top or the loops pop off of the stakes. The ones that came with it did not work well.
I put a small ball at the top of an extension pole that I had to lessen wear. Ta da.

This is a great tent. I am 6’3, and so I have trouble finding a backpack tent that I fit in. This is lightweight enough that I can pack it but large enough I fit with gear and a kid or two. When I got it, late October, I put it up in the backyard. That night a windstorm came in caused it to snow. The tent did great! One of the biggest signs of good equipment came at the end. The tent fit easily back into the storage bag. So many tents are a fight to fit in the bag, but this one packed in easy and small.

Trekker 3 is exactly what I was looking for to pack on my Harley. I have a lot of tents but this one is a favorite already. It’s no fun getting stuck in a mini tent for hours or days in bad weather. I have a butane stove and butane lantern, either one will quickly heat the tent up safely with all the ventalation, I do have a battery operated CO2/CO1 detector but doubt there will ever be a problem. Even in the summer Alaska nights can get cold, I’m snug in this tent and feel like king s*it with the stove or lantern on low, can,t wait to see how it heats up at colder tempertures. It has taped seams so I only sprayed the out side with silicone water proofing. I made my own center pole that breaks down into 16 inch sections. I,m afraid to mention the rediculiuosly low price, they might relize how much a tent like this could sell for befor I get another one.

Received my trekker 3 tent two days ago and have it set up in my yard in the rain right now. So far dry inside. I will leave it up another night to be extra sure. I want to give a special shout out to RC customer service for making sure that I had the newest version of this tent. It looks as if I will not have to do any seam sealing at all. (I did spray the outside though)
I bought this tent for just me and my dog for an upcoming cross country road trip. I wanted the smallest tent I could get that I could have a cot in and stand up in and this fits the bill. I am especially pleased with how small it folds down so it doesn’t take up much space in the car. The folded tent is only 14×7 inches. That is tiny for such a large footprint.
This is my first pyramid style tent but my first pitch was easy and turned out okay. I expect that it will get better with practice. Honestly though it goes up easier than dome style tents I am used to using.
Can’t wait to get out to the camp grounds with this now that I see it will take care of me.

Really happy with the tent so far. Goes up quick. Good sewing and fabric quality. I like the weight of the fabric, not too lightweight with a nice durable floor. It came with just the right number of good quality stakes. We set it up without a center pole by using rope, trees, and the top tent loop. We were not able to achieve a super taut pitch that way but that was not due to any flaws with the tent. It ending up being perfect for me, my son, and our dog. Later, we pitched it in the yard with a center pole and it was super easy and much more taut. Overall, a great value tent. I’m super pleased.

I purchased the trekker 3 for an upcoming hunting trip in the mountains. I am very impressed. It has a ton of space! Very simple and easy to set up. I did it by myself in a matter of minutes. I set it up in my front yard, an had two thunderstorms come through. The tent was bone dry inside. I love the trekking poles! I have been using them in the morning while hiking with a 55lb pack to train for my upcoming hunt. I have had no problems with them so far. I am looking forward to using this tent in CO in September and will submit another review on my experience when I get back home.

Received this tent with the RCP trekking poles today as promised. After reading the instructions I set the tent up and it was very easy and quick. The trekking poles made it simple. Both the tent and poles appear to be very good quality. I was amazed by the size and at 5’8” I was able to stand up which will make it much more functional than my dome tent that takes two people to set up but is too small for two people to sleep in. This tent has plenty of room for two people plus room for their gear. The stakes are very high quality and should not bend like many. The instructions are simple and accurate. I will not have a chance to use it much until fall so will try to do a follow up review later.

I just received and set up the trekker 3 tent and first impressions are very good. It has quite a bit of room for the weight and I fit width wise at 6’3. Always wanted to try a pyramid style tent and the side tieouts make steep walls making the footprint very useable. Very nice expesiouly for the price. Construction all looks good. Plan to follow up this fall after a season’s use. Extra tieouts in the 4 corner seams about 2 ft up like the side tieouts to prevent material flapping, if you may camp above treeline, may be warranted for very high winds. I have seen high winds above treeline that most will never see that broke aluminum poles on good backpacking tents to give perspective. River Country products has been very responsive and customer focused from my interactions with them. Worth buying.
